My goal as an artist, is for my work to be appreciated for its beauty or emotional power. Something beyond just shooting a beautiful image or creating a beautiful art object
That all is true, but there is a more stronger underlying drive; the one to create.
About Mortuus Avium:
Their magic of going beyond where we can, combined with their fragility, fascinates me. In my town, Amsterdam, dead or sick birds are often picked up by humane services, especially the 'Dieren Ambulance' (Veterinarian Ambulance). When dead, they are gathered in large containers, to be cremated later. The sight of all those crumbled feathers, half opaque eyes and broken bodies is a harrowing one.
And I decided to give those deceased (at humane services they avoid the word 'dead') birds back some of their splendor and dignity through my work.
These artworks are not mere photographs. The frame is an intrinsic part of the artwork. A headstone comes to mind, where the image is the text I write with. Only repurposed frames are used, also revided to live on
Working with these deceased and decaying beings in my studio urged also the need, for me as an artist
for an equipose, something vibrant, colorful: a symbol for life, lust and hope. Thus the ‘Vagina Monochromes’© came to life. Death and decay versus life and creation. The end versus the beginning. Thanatos versus Eros.
More within the accepted realm of photography are the 'Nebula'©- and 'Architecture'© series:
The 'Nebula'© series describe my fascination with the age old human fear of mist and what dangers it might contain, while at the same time beautifying mundane object and scenes.
'Architecture'©, began with researching the hate-love paradigm of my city, Amsterdam, with high rises versus the coveted 17th century city centre.
Occasionally eye and lens are drawn to a subject outside the categories above.
New is the creation of art object in the form of 'cold cathode' time pieces, the so called Nixie Clocks. I combine this '50s electronics technique with art-deco designs.
